Last week Cody Rhodes appeared on Friday Night SmackDown and he introduced The Rock who had a face to face confrontation with Roman Reigns. The expectation following The Rock’s return is that we’ll be getting Rock vs. Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins vs. Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania 40.
When Cody Rhodes won the Royal Rumble last month it appeared that The American Nightmare was looking to set up a rematch with Roman Reigns on the Grandest Stage of Them All, and there’s been a lot of backlash from fans on social media due to The Rock stepping in.
Dave Meltzer noted on Wrestling Observer Radio that WWE was expecting Cody Rhodes to get this type of reaction following the segment on SmackDown, but it’s not clear if they were expecting fans to turn on The Rock.
“I don’t know what they were expecting, but they were expecting Cody Rhodes to turn into Daniel Bryan. They were expecting to make Cody Rhodes into a martyr, and making him a bigger babyface out of that. Were they expecting people to boo Dwayne? I don’t know. I’ve asked that one and I haven’t gotten a straight answer.”
The Rock vs. Roman Reigns is expected to be officially announced at the WrestleMania press conference in Las Vegas on Thursday. One way or another it will be interesting to see how fans react to The Rock in the weeks to come.
