Anything can happen on the road to WrestleMania, and business picked up on the road to WrestleMania 41 when The Rock returned and asked Cody to sell his soul. Ultimately Cody declined the offer which led to John Cena’s heel turn at Elimination Chamber.
Recently The Rock got people talking when he appeared on the Pat McAfee Show and indicated that he thinks Cody could turn heel at some point when he said, “My thoughts were always to Cody and what we’ve established with him and his story, and the kind of babyface that he is. If done right, finessed right, and nuanced right, down the road, that guy not only has an incredible run, again, as babyface champion, but also an unheard of run as a heel down the road.”
Fightful Select reports that despite The Rock’s comments there were no plans to turn Cody Rhodes heel as of WrestleMania. It was noted that WWE already has plans for Cody as a babyface throughout the year. The heel turn was pitched earlier this year, but Cody was not in favor of the idea.
Those who spoke on the subject said they didn’t want to put too much of a spotlight on the situation following The Rock’s comments. However, a number of people were against turning Cody heel due to factors such as his heavy contributions to WWE’s success with tickets and merchandise.
Cody Rhodes has not appeared on WWE programming since he dropped the Undisputed WWE Championship to John Cena at WrestleMania 41. So far WWE has yet to confirm when The American Nightmare will be returning, but it was recently reported that Cody is expected to be at Money in the Bank.
