John Cena appearances on WWE programming are few and far between nowadays, but Cena made his return to the red brand a few weeks ago and it was confirmed that he will be challenging Austin Theory for the United States Championship at WrestleMania 39. As Cena exited the ring he told Theory that he’s not ready for the WrestleMania stage then he introduced Cody Rhodes and referred to him as someone who is ready for Mania.

The American Nightmare hugged John Cena and they exchanged words, but it wasn’t clear what they said to one another. Cody Rhodes recently opened up about the exchange while speaking with Stadium Astro and he revealed that he told John Cena he wanted to work a match with him.

“What he said to me on Raw was — I was telling him if he ever does another match, I would like (to work with him), and I think you could hear him pretty well.

“He says, ‘I can’t promise that.’ I also didn’t want to make it about myself at that moment, so I just endlessly thanked him, and then he was at the Nightmare Factory a week later talking to our students.”

Whether or not we’ll get a John Cena vs. Cody Rhodes match in the future remains to be seen, but one way or another they’ll both be challenging for championship gold at WrestleMania next month. Stay tuned for updates.
