CM Punk had a big night on Sunday as he defeated “Hangman” Adam Page to become the new AEW World Champion at the Double or Nothing pay-per-view. However, it seems that Punk’s title reign has already hit a major setback.

The current AEW World Champion appeared on Rampage this week and announced that he is injured, and according to Punk a couple of things are broken. Punk confirmed that he’ll be back but first he’s going to need surgery.

“So, here’s the bad news – I’m injured and need surgery. A couple of things are broken. The biggest one is my heart because I love nothing more than to perform for all of you, and I wanted to go on one hell of a run. That’s the bad news.”

CM Punk also added that he wanted to relinquish the AEW World Championship, but AEW President Tony Khan wouldn’t let him do that.

“I told Tony I would relinquish this title, but Tony told me that he believes in CM Punk. And he believes this is just a bump in the road, and I tell you god damn it, I needed to hear that.”

Instead it was announced that AEW Dynamite next week will kick off with a battle royale, and the winner will go on to face Jon Moxley in the main event. The winner of that match will then go on to AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door where a new champion will be crowned. It hasn’t been officially confirmed, but it’s presumed that the winner will face Punk’s original Forbidden Door opponent Hiroshi Tanahashi. Stay tuned for more updates on the AEW World Championship as they become available.
