Chris Jericho is a man who is just full of surprises. The first ever Undisputed Champion has done just about all there is to do in the professional wrestling business, but he still continues to find ways to push his career to new heights.

Over the weekend Jericho made a huge announcement when he appeared on the big screen at NJPW Power Struggle and challenged Kenny Omega to a match. The match has been made official, and now fans are going to see Jericho vs. Omega at Wrestle Kingdom 12 on January 4th.

It was recently reported that Jericho had been in talks with NJPW since mid-summer, and the idea for him to face Kenny Omega at Wrestle Kingdom started coming together around August.

In regards to why Jericho challenged Omega, it seems that he was inspired by a high profile fight that took place over the summer.

Dave Meltzer noted on Wrestling Observer Radio that the idea came to Chris Jericho while he was watching the buildup for the highly anticipated Conor McGregor vs. Floyd Mayweather fight, and he wanted to do something that people thought they would never see.

After deciding he wanted to work a match with Kenny Omega, he got in touch with Don Callis who then brought the idea up to Omega and then the idea was presented to head NJPW booker Gedo.

Jericho’s negotiations with NJPW reportedly took place at their New York office and lasted for several weeks before the two sides came to a deal.

As of right now the deal is just for the one match with Omega at Wrestle Kingdom 12 in January.
