Over the weekend Cody Rhodes picked up a massive victory when he pinned Brock Lesnar in the main event of WWE Backlash. It was announced on Sunday that Cody Rhodes would be competing in the WWE World Heavyweight Championship tournament on Raw, and The American Nightmare kicked off the show with a promo.
The fans in Jacksonville chanted Cody’s name as he asked them what they wanted to talk about. He referenced his history with AEW when he said Jacksonville was his home during the pandemic. Cody talked about his victory over Lesnar and said that the WWE World Heavyweight Championship is next for him.
Cody walked over to the belt and said that he will fight until he’s announced as the new WWE World Heavyweight Champion. The fans chanted “you deserve it” loudly. He then said “let the tournament begin” and Seth Rollins made his way out.
Seth won his respective match when he pinned Shinsuke Nakamura after hitting him with the Pedigree. The second triple threat match took place later in the night, and it looked like Cody had it won after he hit The Miz with Cross Rhodes three times, but Brock Lesnar appeared out of nowhere and pulled Cody out of the ring as he went for the pin.
Finn Balor won the match and Brock Lesnar put Cody through the announce table with the F5. Brock was busted up from the match at Backlash with a huge wound on his forehead and he kept screaming “look at my face!” He told Cody Rhodes that he wants a fight, and he challenged him to a match at Night of Champions as Cody was out of it on the floor.
