The Royal Rumble aired live from Tropicana Field on Saturday night and the drama was at an all time high as the final two came down to CM Punk and Cody Rhodes. Ultimately The American Nightmare eliminated Punk and it was later revealed that Punk suffered an injury during the match that has sidelined him for an undetermined amount of time.
Fightful Select reports that there’s no truth to rumors that Punk was originally set to win the Royal Rumble. Cody Rhodes was always set to win the 30 man Royal Rumble match and plans came together as they were intended to.
WWE did have to make changes to the original creative plans for Monday Night Raw this week due to the injury CM Punk suffered on Saturday night. The segment involving Cody Rhodes and Seth Rollins face to face in the ring was added to Raw as a result of CM Punk’s injury.
It was also noted that over the weekend Cody Rhodes was the top selling superstar at WWE Superstore at Tropicana Field and his “Rumble Winner” shirt was also the top selling shirt on WWE Shop.
