They say that anything can happen when you watch professional wrestling, and fans who tuned into AEW Dynamite last week got to see the debut of former WWE Cruiserweight Champion Buddy Matthews.

Fightful Select reports that Buddy Matthews and AEW started having discussions as far back as last fall, but it’s not known when exactly the deal was signed.

In addition to working for Major League Wrestling and New Japan Pro Wrestling, it’s being said that there were overtures on behalf of IMPACT Wrestling to bring Matthews into the company, but that didn’t end up happening.

People in AEW noted that Buddy Matthews made a good impression when he arrived at the venue for his debut last week. There was also said to be another spot that made a particularly good impression when Matthews had a planned spot that he nixed after finding out involved another person’s finishing move.

Several members of the AEW roster reportedly knew Matthews would be joining the company, and the House of Black stable three weeks before it happened which led to speculation that the deal has been done for some time.
