Austin Theory has become one of WWE’s fastest rising stars and it seemed that he was on his way to the top of the ladder in WWE when he won the Money in the Bank briefcase last year.

For a while Austin Theory teased that he was going to cash in on Undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns, but after a few teases it started to become clear that wasn’t going to happen. Eventually Theory cashed in on Seth Rollins who was the United States Champion at the time and fans were shocked when Theory failed to win the US Title.

Austin Theory recently appeared on Busted Open Radio and he explained why the Money in the Bank briefcase ended up becoming an anchor for him as he was trying to establish himself on the main roster.

“I think the briefcase is where it got a lot of controversy. Basically, it just kind of was getting to the point if you were looking at it from like a widescale of ‘where’s this going,’ you look at Roman Reigns, he’s pretty much immortal right now.

“So, I think, for me, in a sense of, I need to be way more built up to look even possible to beat Roman Reigns. The briefcase was just kind of an anchor on me.”

Even though Austin Theory didn’t win his Money in the Bank cash in he did end up winning the US Title eventually and he’s the current champion at the moment. WWE announced earlier this week that Theory will defend his championship inside the Elimination Chamber later this month.
