When AEW first launched in 2019 the company was proud to announce that Jim Ross would be joining the commentary team. Ross has had a fairly consistent presence on AEW programming over the last few years, but recently he’s been sidelined due to health issues.

During a recent episode of the Grilling JR podcast the WWE Hall of Famer insisted that he will be returning to AEW at some point, but also noted that he doesn’t have a lot of time left on his contract with the company.

“I will be back. I will continue working. My contract with AEW is still in place. I don’t have a lot of time left on it, but I’ve got enough. I’m not concerned about that. Either I’m retained, or I’m not. I’m just gonna take it a day at a time and see how it works out. But I enjoy working for AEW. It’s fun to be part of a startup. I said that when I was hired. It’s great to see all these young guys start to come into their own, and I’d love to be there for the rest of the journey to help guide them along the way, almost in a talent relations type situation. I enjoy helping these kids.”

In May of 2022 during an episode of the Grilling JR podcast Jim Ross stated that he signed a contract extension with AEW for “about a year and a half.” It’s not clear if AEW will be looking to sign him to a new deal, but Ross also noted that he hopes to continue working into 2024 so that he can celebrate 50 years in the wrestling business.
