It’s been been a rather uncertain time for WWE recently because they can’t seem to get as many people to watch the show as they used to. But this week on Raw they tried something out and it seemed to work.
WWE had just over 3 million viewers at the beginning of the show and they seemed to be able to get people to keep watching until the end. Near the start of the show this week Kurt Angle said he would reveal who had been jumping Enzo and Big Cass at the end of the night. People were obviously interested to see what might happen.
Of course the week before was the lowest rated Raw of the year because it went up against game 5 of the NBA Finals. The Golden State Warriors vs the Cleveland Cavaliers on ABC was apparently much more appealing than whatever was happening on Raw. They only drew 2,542,000 viewers last week which is still decent although it’s nothing compared to the higher numbers Raw drew during the Monday Night Wars.
Although viewers did drop off slightly during the third hour of the show, it looks like Roman Reigns’ announcement was able to bring in fans and the promising final segment was able to keep most of them. The fact Samoa Joe vs Roman Reigns happened that night during the second hour only went to help things with a returning Braun Strowman being the icing on the cake.
In the end, Raw registered at around 3,102,000 viewers which is still pretty remarkable. Eric Bischoff noted on his podcast that any other show on cable would kill for that kind of viewership. So whenever they drop below 3 million it’s still not an awful thing because Raw’s ratings are still much better than other shows, especially considering its three-hour (or more) run time.
With the media changing so much it is drastically affecting the way people consume entertainment. Fans can enjoy pretty much a live experience of Raw by just jumping on social media at this point without turning their television to the USA Network at all. But it’s nice to see WWE getting a good number for a pretty decent show.
With Brock Lesnar appearing on Raw next week from Los Angeles hopefully that will be a ratings boost as well.
