AJ Styles was SmackDown Live’s top star for several months after he won the WWE Championship, and although he’s still one of the brand’s top stars, he’s not currently in the WWE Title picture.
However, AJ Styles is set to challenge Kevin Owens for the United States Championship at Backlash in a few weeks, and he recently told The Sun that the title shot is a pretty big deal to him.
“I’m excited about it. I think the United States Championship is as big of a deal to me as the WWE Championship, I’m just not in line for that right now and that’s okay. I set goals and being U.S. Champion is one of those and I want to make that Unites States Championship as important as the WWE Championship.”
Styles is certainly ambitious when it comes to his goals, but John Cena proved with his US Open Challenge a few years ago that the United States Championship can be elevated if it’s on the right star.
Right now the belt is being carried by Kevin Owens, and AJ also noted that fans can expect them to put on a show when they finally clash.
“We’ve been able to do this before. This isn’t the first time we’ve been in the ring together, not even in the WWE but the matches are always going to be good. You get two guys in the ring that are passionate about what they do and hopefully we’ll put on a show to prove that.”
