According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, there is talk of putting together a “shooters” stable on SmackDown Live when Shelton Benjamin recovers from his rotator cuff surgery. Benjamin is expected to return in six months.
The stable would consist of Shelton Benjamin, Jack Swagger and Dolph Ziggler, and the stable would be similar to WCW’s Varsity Club which consisted of Rick Steiner, Steve Williams, Mike Rotunda, Dan Spivey and Kevin Sullivan.
There were originally plans for American Alpha’s Chad Gable to lead a similar group in NXT. However, the idea was reportedly nixed by Vince McMahon because he doesn’t like those kind of gimmicks and felt that it would have hurt everyone involved.
It’s also being reported that there’s talk of bringing D-Von Dudley back to work as an agent backstage. D-Von would still be allowed to run his Team 3D Wrestling Academy in Florida, but it would likely mean more singles work for Bubba Ray on the indie scene.
