They say that anything can happen in the world of professional wrestling, and back in 2017, Kevin Owens defeated AJ Styles to become the new United States Champion when the two stars faced off at Battleground. Even though Kevin Owens walked away with the gold that night that wasn’t how the match was originally supposed to go.
While discussing the match on the Phenomenally Retro Podcast, AJ Styles confirmed that he thought he had his shoulder up, but he later reviewed the footage and found out that he was wrong.
“Here’s something that people don’t know. When I lost that one to him, I wasn’t supposed to lose. My shoulder was supposed to be up. I thought it was, I was p*ssed. I came back like, ‘What the freak is going on?’ Vince was like, ‘Your shoulder wasn’t up.’ I was like, ‘1000% it was up.’ I’m mad, not because I lost, because why the freak did he count something that wasn’t a pin?
He goes, ‘Show him, take him to the truck and show him.’ I go back and watch it, sure enough, my shoulder is down. So, I go to Vince, ‘You’re right, I was wrong. Sorry about that.’”
