CM Punk made his big return to WWE on this week’s episode of Monday Night Raw, and he replaced Cody Rhodes in the main event after The American Nightmare was attacked by Gunther in the opening segment of the show.
The Second City Saint went on to defeat Sami Zayn to become the new Undisputed WWE Champion, and it’s been reported that Punk is set to defend the title against Cody Rhodes at SummerSlam in August.
False Finish is reporting that CM Punk winning the Undisputed WWE Championship and defending it at SummerSlam had been in the plans for well over a month.
Originally the idea was for CM Punk to challenge Cody Rhodes for the title at WrestleMania 43 in Saudi Arabia next year, but it’s being said that WWE is preparing for SummerSlam to be better than WrestleMania 42 was.
With Punk vs. Rhodes all but confirmed for SummerSlam, and Seth Rollins vs. Roman Reigns and Brock Lesnar vs. Oba Femi officially announced for the card it appears that WWE is pulling out all the stops to stack the deck for their biggest party of the summer.
