This week’s episode of Friday Night SmackDown aired live from Kansas City and the show kicked off with a huge match. Cody Rhodes put the Undisputed WWE Championship on the line when he defended his title against Gunther, and Sami Zayn was the special guest referee.
Early on in the match Sami got physical with Cody as The American Nightmare was pummeling Gunther in the corner, so Sami pulled him away. Gunther took advantage and hit Cody with a big boot as Sami was restraining him.
After a few minutes things got tense between Gunther and Sami as Cody kicked out of a pin, and Gunther argued with Sami as he told him to do his job. Immediately after Cody connected with the Cross Rhodes, but Gunther got his foot under the rope, so Sami stopped the count. Cody then argued with Sami and Sami shoved him then Gunther locked in a sleeper hold.
Sami looked conflicted as Gunther tried to put Cody to sleep. The American Nightmare managed to get to the ropes, but Gunther wouldn’t break the hold, so Sami had to pull Gunther off of Cody. The Ring General responded by shoving Sami, so Sami slapped him. Gunther retaliated with a powerbomb on Sami.
Cody hit a Cody Cutter followed by a Cross Rhodes. A new referee ran down to the ring and Gunther managed to kick out at two. Gunther hit Cody with a dropkick and a powerbomb then covered him. As the new ref was counting the pin Sami pulled the ref out of the ring.
The American Nightmare was trying to get a sunset flip pin on Gunther, but The Ring General held onto the ropes. Sami kicked Gunther’s arms off the ropes then did a fast count as Cody pinned Gunther to retain. After the match Cody looked upset as Nick Aldis made his way out to argue with Sami Zayn.
Backstage everyone argued and Cody returned to the ring, grabbed a mic and demanded that the match be restarted. Gunther threw Sami Zayn into a table then ran out to the ring with a referee.
In the ring Cody and Gunther traded sleeper holds then Sami came out and attacked Gunther, so the match ended in a disqualification. Sami demanded the title. The referee tried to take it away from him, so he shoved the referee. Cody grabbed Sami from behind and Sami hit Cody with the title then started to crash out as he realized what he did. The fans chanted “Sami sucks!”
