John Cena retired from in-ring competition when he was defeated by Gunther in his final match at Saturday Night’s Main Event back in December of 2025, but he’s still very much part of the WWE Universe.

The 17 time world champion returned to host WrestleMania 42, and ahead of Backlash, Cena teased that he would be making an announcement that was going to, “shock the very foundation of WWE, from its fans to its superstars, from its champions down to its rookies.”

The arena erupted as John Cena made his entrance and he thanked the fans for the reaction when he got in the ring. Cena said that ever since his last match he’s been wondering about the next phase of his WWE career, and the fans chanted, “one more match.”

He told everyone that he thinks a lot about his last match, but even though some people were upset, he was truly happy, because everyone made it something bigger, an evening of opportunity. He brought up all the NXT stars who stepped up that night such as Sol Ruca, Je’Von Evans and Oba Femi.

John Cena said it hit him, and we have to do this again. He then announced the John Cena Classic, and explained it will be an entire event where WWE stars and NXT stars give the fans everything they have in the hopes that they will become a champion.

Cena said it will be a brand new event, for a brand new championship, that he is putting his name on. As he continued he told the fans that the audience will vote to crown the champion of the John Cena Classic. He explained that every participant will qualify, so if they don’t win the match, they can still be crowned champion via the audience.

John Cena added that it will not just be a one year event, he wants it to last for thirty years if possible. Cena did not announce when, or where the first ever John Cena Classic will take place.
