The world title matches for WrestleMania 42 have been locked in, but it seems that a number of ideas were pitched for the Undisputed WWE Championship before WWE decided to move forward with plans for a Cody Rhodes vs. Randy Orton match.
Back in January, Cody Rhodes dropped the Undisputed WWE Championship to Drew McIntyre and it was rumored that WWE was planning to book the two stars in a rematch at WrestleMania. Earlier this week it was reported that there was a pitch for Drew and Cody to clash in a Hell in a Cell match on the Grandest Stage of Them All.
In the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer noted that at one point the idea of Roman Reigns and Cody Rhodes facing off inside a Hell in a Cell match at WrestleMania was also discussed.
“This ends weeks of speculation and changes when it came to that title, which originally was scheduled for Rhodes vs. Roman Reigns, possibly in a Hell in a Cell match.”
“Those in WWE that we asked said that there was never a serious thought or plan, but Hell in a Cell was heavily discussed for Rhodes vs. Reigns before the decision to change everything after the injury to Seth Rollins and the decision to put the title on McIntyre.”
One way or another WWE has picked a direction for WrestleMania and it’s also being reported that it’s pretty much a lock that Rhodes vs. Orton will be a singles match rather than WWE adding people to make a it a three or four way match.
