We’re currently on the road to WrestleMania and the path to the Show of Shows has been filled with twists and turns this year. Drew McIntyre defeated Cody Rhodes to win the Undisputed WWE Championship back in January, and Randy Orton recently earned a shot at the belt when he won the men’s Elimination Chamber match.

Ahead of Orton’s title match at WrestleMania, Nick Aldis has announced that Drew McIntyre will defend the Undisputed WWE Championship against Cody on this week’s episode of SmackDown, and it looks like the title could be changing hands.

PWInsider is reporting that one WWE source noted the direction could always change, and stated that this is not a shot at Drew McIntyre’s work, but WWE wants to deliver Cody Rhodes vs. Randy Orton. The Viper winning the men’s Elimination Chamber match was the start of the move in that direction. The feeling is that it was a nice surprise on the road to WrestleMania and gave fans something beyond what was already expected.

At this point in time there’s no word on where this leaves Drew McIntyre. It’s possible WWE could pivot to a triple threat match, or Drew McIntyre could face off against Jacob Fatu. It’s also being said that it’s a long shot, but WWE could always do an angle to set up a Drew McIntyre vs. Nick Aldis match as Aldis has not yet made his WrestleMania debut.

With WWE moving toward an Orton vs. Rhodes match for WrestleMania the expectation seems to be that the Undisputed WWE Championship will be changing hands on Friday.

Stay tuned for updates.
