It’s been quite the year for John Cena as he kicked off his retirement tour back in June and he punched his ticket to WrestleMania when he won the men’s Elimination Chamber match. Shortly after he secured a title shot on the Grandest Stage of Them All, Cena turned heel when he attacked Cody Rhodes, then he went on to challenge The American Nightmare for the WWE Championship at WrestleMania 41.
Cena’s match with Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania 41 has been criticized for a wide variety of reasons, and Cody recently explained on the Pat McAfee Show why the “lack of a match” ended up being a blessing in disguise for their rematch at SummerSlam.
“I hate saying this, but part of the beauty of how great that match is was the lack of a match that really took place at WrestleMania, in a sense. Sometimes, the long game is the game. And again, it’s like going on last—it’s a hard spot occasionally, but the bigger picture. I treat them as they were the same match, and then we just got to use all the bells and whistles.”
At SummerSlam, Cody Rhodes was able to regain the WWE Championship when he picked up a win over John Cena during the night 2 main event. Currently Cody is still the champion and he’s set to face off against Seth Rollins for the WWE Crown Jewel Championship at Crown Jewel: Perth later this month. John Cena will also be in action at Crown Jewel as he’s going one on one with AJ Styles.
