CM Punk first joined AEW in August of 2021, but his run with the company officially came to an end in September of 2023 when Punk’s AEW contract was terminated following a backstage incident at the All In pay-per-view.
At AEW All In, CM Punk defended his Real AEW World Championship against Samoa Joe, but he was reportedly involved in a backstage altercation with Jack Perry before making his way down to the ring for the match.
DJ Whoo Kid was at AEW All In as he accompanied Swerve Strickland to the ring. He also claimed to have witnessed the altercation involving CM Punk and he shared some details about what happened while speaking with Jim Norton and Sam Roberts.
“It was crazy. It’s ongoing they told me, this has been an ongoing…that was the last straw. It was the biggest moment for AEW and I guess he was trying to sabotage that moment. He wasn’t trying to go out there. I’m in the middle. I’m the fly on the wall. It was very intense. I always thought it was fake and all this s***. It’s more real. It was wrestling back there. A DDT, everything. I’m exaggerating.”
“There was a yelling moment where he was like ‘f*** this s***, this is our moment, everybody get the f*** out there and do your s***.’ I was like, I don’t wrestle, but I was about to go out there. It was very intense. I will always respect wrestling after I saw that.”
“The big guy. The Hawaiian-looking [dude]. It was the guy going ham and I was like, ‘Oh s***.’ Then blood was everywhere from the fight before that. They came in and they were bleeding. I was like, ‘what is going on around here?’ This was intense.”
Ultimately All In ended up being CM Punk’s last appearance for All Elite Wrestling as he went on to return to WWE at Survivor Series in November of 2023. Punk has declared for the 2024 men’s Royal Rumble match and has made it clear that he’s focused on main eventing WrestleMania 40.
