Over the last year or so Sami Zayn has become one of the top Superstars in WWE, and he recently rode his wave of momentum right to the main event of WrestleMania 39. Sami Zayn & Kevin Owens managed to defeat The Usos to win the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Titles in the WrestleMania main event and it seems that Sami is taking his career to new heights.
It’s been a long road to the top for Sami Zayn and he spent years working on the independent scene as El Generico before he signed with WWE in 2013. Zayn recently spoke to Whiskey Ginger about making the transition to WWE after working on the independent scene, and he noted that he had to take a big pay cut when he first joined World Wrestling Entertainment.
“When I signed for WWE, I actually took a pay cut because it’s like, okay, you’re signing for WWE, it’s like the opportunity to make money, right? I think my last year on the independent [circuit], I’m throwing all these numbers out willy-nilly, but whatever. (…) So, I think my last year on the independent, I made somewhere around $100,000 and I signed my first WWE contract for $39,000.”
Last week during night 1 of the 2023 WWE Draft, Sami Zayn & Kevin Owens successfully defended the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Titles against The Usos. There’s currently no word on their next feud, or how WWE will handle the tag title situation following the draft. Stay tuned for updates.
