Steve Austin has had his fair share of WrestleMania moments and one match that changed the course of his career was the WrestleMania 14 main event. The Texas Rattlesnake challenged Shawn Michaels for the WWE Championship and Austin won the belt for the first time in his career when he hit Michaels with the Stunner and Mike Tyson counted the pin.
The match is considered by many to be one of the turning points in the Monday Night Wars. However, Austin confirmed he doesn’t think it was a good match during an UpUpDownDown live stream when he said, “I love Shawn and have the utmost respect for him but I don’t consider that match to be a good match at all.”
Shawn Michaels suffered an injury a few months before during a casket match at the Royal Rumble and was not in the best place mentally or physically heading into the WrestleMania 14 main event. After the match Shawn Michaels didn’t return to a WWE ring until 2002.
Austin elaborated on the purpose of the big WWE Championship match at WrestleMania 14 when he said, “it wasn’t about the match, it was about transferring the title.”
