It’s certainly not uncommon at all for WWE to make changes to their announce teams and last year WWE had to shuffle the deck when they moved Wade Barrett to SmackDown so that Pat McAfee could take time away to call college football. Now that the college football season is over fans have been patiently waiting for McAfee’s return.
Fightful Select is reporting that several talent believe that Pat McAfee could be making his return to WWE soon. One person even mentioned that they heard McAfee’s name mentioned for the Royal Rumble.
Pat McAfee started making appearances on WWE programming in 2018 and he became the color commentator for the SmackDown brand alongside Michael Cole in 2021. Last year he stepped into the ring to compete at WrestleMania when he defeated Austin Theory, but was then defeated by Vince McMahon immediately after. He also went on to defeat Baron Corbin at the SummerSlam premium live event.
