Sami Zayn won the WWE Intercontinental Championship at Elimination Chamber, and he went on to successfully defend the belt against Daniel Bryan at WrestleMania 36.
Been Sami Zayn has been exercising his option not to participate in recent WWE TV tapings during the coronavirus pandemic, and WWE made the decision to strip him of the Intercontinental Championship.
A tournament was announced to crown a new champion, and the tournament kicked off last week on Friday Night SmackDown.
It’s not clear at this point in time when Zayn will be returning, but the Wrestling Observer Newsletter reports that he’ll probably work a program with whoever wins the tournament.
The tournament will continue tonight on SmackDown with AJ Styles vs. Shinsuke Nakamura, and Jeff Hardy vs. Sheamus.
