Last night during SmackDown Live, AJ Styles became the No. 1 contender for Kevin Owens’ United States Championship. A lot of people were surprised since Styles was rumored to be re-entering the WWE Title picture to feud with Randy Orton.
However, it’s being reported by CageSideSeats that WWE officials are attempting to kill time on SmackDown Live in order for the rivalry between Randy Orton and Bray Wyatt to conclude at the Payback PPV in a few weeks. There are no plans for AJ to win the US Title anytime soon.
WWE officials may be using Owens vs. Styles to waste time, but it will also be helpful to do a few other things that the powers that be are trying to do on SmackDown. First of all, the feud will help establish Kevin Owens and the US Title on the brand after the “Superstars Shakeup.”
Not only that, but Styles is walking the line between being a babyface and a heel right now. A lot of people think it’s only a matter of time before he’s a full-fledged babyface. Working with Owens will help continue that trend until a feud between Orton and Styles can finally begin.
