Charlotte’s title defense at Payback was surrounded by controversy as WWE attempted to recreate the Montreal Screwjob. Chalotte and Ric Flair made their way to the ring and they brought out referee Charles Robinson to address the controversy. WWE played up Robinson’s history with Ric Flair and his run as Little Naitch in WCW. Charlotte asked if Robinson’s relationship with her father inspired him to screw Natalya over at Payback. Robinson told her his respect for Flair had nothing to do with it and the decision is final.

This prompted Natalya to come out and get in the faces of Charlotte and Ric Flair. Ric Flair is never one to back down from a confrontation, so one thing led to another and Natalya ended up putting Ric Flair in the Sharpshooter to end the segment.
Backstage Stephanie McMahon told Charlotte that she needs to prove to Natalya that the Figure 8 is a better submission than the Sharpshooter. She then announced that Charlotte will be defending her title in a submission match at Extreme Rules.
She then turned her attention to Ric Flair and told him that he would be banned from ringside. After Stephanie McMahon made the announcement Charlotte looked nervous.
