WrestleMania 39 has been a two night event for a few years now and in the weeks leading up to the Show of Shows there was a lot of talk about which matches would headline. It was established that Cody Rhodes vs. Roman Reigns would main event night 2, and it was rumored that Charlotte Flair vs. Rhea Ripley was considered for the main event of night 1.
Ultimately WWE decided to go with Kevin Owens & Sami Zayn vs. The Usos for the night 1 main event and the match ended with a huge title change as Owens & Zayn picked up the win. However, Rhea Ripley recently said on the After The Bell podcast that she believes her match should have been the main event.
“Coming out of that match, I did feel like we stole the show. I feel we went out there and left everything we had in the ring and proved to everyone exactly why we should have been in the main event spot. Yes, we didn’t have a good build like Sami, Owens, and the Usos; at the same time, Charlotte and I, every time we step in the ring, we bring the brutality, we bring the ferocious when we go out there and we just beat the living crap out of each other. All the praise that we got, it made me happy and made me proud that we went out there and beat the crap out of each other and loved it. It’s a weird feeling. I get it, I do get it.”
One way or another Rhea Ripley still had a huge night as she managed to defeat Charlotte Flair to win the SmackDown Women’s Championship. Do you think WWE made the right call with the night 1 main event? Sound off in the comments below.
