Could WWE Be Setting Up A Dream Match For SummerSlam?

This year’s SummerSlam will be the first joint pay-per-view between both Raw and Smackdown following the announced Brand Split next month so WWE will obviously be hoping to build it into one of the biggest events of the year.

Since UFC fighter Paige VanZant turned down the opportunity to appear at ‘The Biggest Party of the Summer’ in favour of a return to The Octagon, it seems WWE will now have to step it up and the latest rumours suggest just that.

Brock Lesnar has been a hot topic of discussion lately, especially since he is set to step back into his UFC boots next month for the first time in almost five years, WWE have stated that this is just a one-off appearance that could see Ronda Rousey appear at next year’s WrestleMania in return.

Brock returns to WWE at this year’s SummerSlam in just seven weeks time and he could be set to face his biggest test to date. Rumours have circulated about Randy Orton making his return and Bray Wyatt finally being given the match he deserved at WrestleMania this year when Vince McMahon decided to put Dean Ambrose in his place despite the build up all being in Wyatt’s favour.

That being said, it seems WWE could be planning a much bigger obstacle for The Beast to overcome when he rejoins the roster. An obstacle the size of the former NXT and Intercontinental Champion Kevin Owens.

Owens has made one hell of a splash in WWE in the year he has been on the Raw roster and he himself requested a match against Brock Lesnar earlier this year. Could WWE finally be ready to give him the biggest match of his short main roster career?

There is no doubt in anyone’s mind that this would be a dream match, given Owen’s background on the independent scene and Lesnar’s incredible background in UFC and mixed martial arts, it is obvious that this would be one of the matches of the night.

Lesnar faced The Undertaker at last year’s SummerSlam in a match that was deemed ‘To big for WrestleMania’ so WWE really need to make sure they follow that up with a match that will definitely bring in a crowd. Especially since this will be the night after what could to another record setting NXT: Takeover Brooklyn.

A match against Randy Orton doesn’t hold as much weight as one against Owens and even more so now that many fans think Owens was held back by not being given the Money in the Bank briefcase this year.

Owens fans have wanted him to be pushed to the top of the company for a long time and he definitely has the skills on the mic and in the ring to back this up. It has taken him a long time to be pushed into the spotlight and he will be happy to reach out and take this opportunity with both arms.

The only problem with this match would be that Owens will most likely be on the receiving end of a now famous Brock Lesnar beating. One that the likes of Dean Ambrose, The Undertaker and John Cena will happily tell him about heading into the main event level match.

There is no harm in Owens suffering a loss of this magnitude and he could easily use it to his advantage and jump back into the title race following the biggest event of the Summer. Lesnar needs to come back into the company looking strong after his UFC match whether he wins or loses and WWE knows that they need to give him a strong opponent who will be able to build up a good fight.

The prospect of the promos between Kevin Owens and Paul Heyman to build up this match in the coming weeks is already mouth watering without the additional fact that for the first time in his career, Kevin Owens will be being man handled in the middle of the ring.

This match will definitely be one that will grab the WWE Universe’s attention, The Company need to make sure when they book this year’s event that they choose wisely because if it is still between Randy Orton, Bray Wyatt and Kevin Owens then they should definitely choose the latter. Owens is one of the stars who are the future of the business and he could learn so much from having a match of this calibre with someone at the level of Brock Lesnar.
