If you love news, then you are probably aware of Vice. They’ve become known for not only their in-depth investigative reporting but also taking cameras to places where you’d never want to go but you still need to know what’s going on.
But Vice’s reporting recently rubbed WWE the wrong way when they put out a well-written article concerning The Ultimate Warrior’s bigoted past and how WWE would prefer people forget about it.
The article discussed WWE’s attempts to whitewash The Ultimate Warrior’s memory after the legend has left us. If he hadn’t reconciled with WWE before his passing it might be a different story. But since Warrior sadly passed away mere days after his WWE Hall Of Fame induction and WWE has introduced a yearly “Warrior Award” it might be the best idea for WWE to keep The Warrior’s memory a little bit more sacred.
In the article, The Warrior’s widow Dana was quoted defending her husband’s past social faux pas transgressions by saying: “I will not be disloyal to my husband’s memory or speak ill of a man who is not here to defend himself. I can, however, tell you his heart was changed by conversations with his two daughters. The true testament of the man behind the character is his ability to evolve. My husband did just that.”
Since the article was released there has been a considerable amount of attention drawn to the situation. After all, the article highlighted some things The Ultimate Warrior said that modern-day WWE might not approve at all.
WWE responded to this article in a very tactful and publicly responsible way by saying:
“WWE’s ‘Unleash Your Warrior’ breast cancer awareness campaign and annual ‘Warrior Award’ recognize individuals that exhibit the strength and courage of WWE’s legendary character The Ultimate Warrior. Any attempt to distract from the mission of these initiatives and take the spotlight away from the honorees is unfortunately misguided.”
Even though their reply on the situation was tactful, it still had to hurt a little bit to have such a bright light shine on some parts of The Warrior’s past they would probably like to sweep under the rug.
