WrestleMania 33 is right around the corner, and there’s been a lot of discussion as to what the card could look like this year. Huge stars like Goldberg, The Undertaker and Brock Lesnar are expected to work the event, and it looks like we could be seeing a NXT star on the card as well.
According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, WWE officials are discussing the possibility of calling Samoa Joe up to the main roster for a top match at WrestleMania 33. It was also noted that the idea would include a “major push” for Joe.
It’s been rumored for weeks now that we could be seeing a few NXT stars in the Royal Rumble match this year and Samoa Joe’s name seems to be making the rounds often. Samoa Joe’s inclusion in the Royal Rumble isn’t confirmed at this point, but if WWE officials do decide to pull the trigger in regards to calling him up to the main roster, it’s likely that he will end up making his debut sooner than later.
Samoa Joe has had a great run in NXT, as his feuds with Finn Balor and Shinsuke Nakamura have been some of the more memorable feuds that NXT has produced so far. Joe won the NXT Title from Finn Balor at a NXT live event in April of 2016, and he later became the first ever two time NXT Champion when he defeated Shinsuke Nakamura at NXT TakeOver: Toronto.
Samoa Joe’s second reign didn’t last very long, as Shinsuke Nakamura beat him a mere 14 days later and the loss also earned Joe the honor of having the shortest NXT Title reign so far.
With Bobby Roode set to challenge Shinsuke Nakamura for the title at NXT TakeOver: San Antonio, it seems that Samoa Joe’s main event run with the brand is winding down. Finn Balor seemed to be in a similar situation before he was called up where he dropped the title to Joe, and then laid low for a while before he was called up during the draft.
Samoa Joe has been in the business for a long time and a Royal Rumble debut would definitely be a huge moment for his career. Samoa Joe has his fair share of fans out there, and they’ve been waiting for him to make the jump to the main roster for quite some time now. Hopefully WWE will give everyone what they want at the Royal Rumble on January 29.
