“Stone Cold” Steve Austin is without a doubt one of the biggest names in the history of professional wrestling, but his path to the top was full of obstacles.
Prior to signing with WWE, Austin had been let go by WCW then he made the jump to ECW before eventually heading to WWE.
Austin spoke to Bret Hart on the latest episode of Steve Austin’s Broken Skull Sessions, and Hart told The Rattlesnake that he was the one who suggested Vince McMahon sign Steve.
“You know, this is a true story that people don’t know. I was going to Vince all the time trying to bring new guys in. I remember talking about you. You, I think, had just signed with ECW. And I said ‘Why didn’t you guys grab Steve Austin? He was free, he was available. You’re looking for new guys all the time, he’s one of the best guys down there.’ I talked to Vince about it, and I remember the next week, you were sitting in the dressing room.”
Hart and Austin went on to face off at WrestleMania 13 in a match that is largely credited with taking Austin’s career to a whole new level, but it seems that Bret was looking out for Steve even before he joined the company.
