Vince McMahon is without a doubt one of the most influential people in the world of professional wrestling, and he has the power to make stars.
Mark Henry has had a Hall of Fame career in WWE, but he recently explained to Steve Austin on an episode of Broken Skull Sessions that he hung up on Vince McMahon the first time Vince called him.
“Vince called Terry Todd and got my phone number. He called me at the training center and, mind you, I was a big time wrestling fan. About six of the guys that were at the training center with me, they watched wrestling every Monday night. So I’m thinking, ‘Hey Mark, phone call for you.’ All right, I come down the hallway and he goes, ‘This is Vince McMahon. Hey, how are you doing?’ Okay, Wes, click. I hung up on him.”
Henry went on to say that next time Vince McMahon called him he was standing by the phone, and shaking as he apologized for hanging up the first time.
“Aw, shit. I’m standing by the phone and I’m shaking. I ain’t afraid of nothing. Steve, this is me. I’ll fight a bear with a switch and I’m shaking and because of my fandom, when the phone rings, I grab the phone, not even finished ringing. Vince goes, ‘Hello?’ He’s like, ‘Mark Henry?’ I said, ‘Sorry, I hung up, I thought it was one of my friends.’ He said, ‘I heard you’re a big wrestling fan. I want you to go to Connecticut to see how we do stuff.'”
Obviously things worked out in the end, as Mark Henry went on to become WWE World Heavyweight Champion, and he was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2018.
