WWE Going After Torrent Users, Files Lawsuit For Downloading WWE Studios Film

If you aren’t aware people use torrents to get movies, television shows, and music through peer to peer filing sharing programs and websites without paying for them. If you’ve never used a torrent before, it’s not the best time to start. It’s becoming increasingly risky and lawsuits are being filed all the time against normal people who use these programs to attain their entertainment.

If a company wants to seek out users who download their copyrighted material and take legal action they can. This is why most college campuses in the United States have put up whatever blocks they can against torrent sites. But, that won’t fix all of the problems.

The fact is some movie studios, music labels, and other companies are fed up with losing so much money to these “internet pirates.” WWE is joining the list of companies that aren’t going to take it anymore.

WWE filed a lawsuit this morning in the United States District Court of Connecticut. In the lawsuit, WWE is saying people infringed WWE Studios’ property copyright to “unlawfully acquire, reproduce, and distribute” WWE Studios’ production, “The Eliminators.”

WWE is saying they have the IP addresses of users who unlawfully downloaded the film that stars Bad News Barrett and has a current rating of 31% on Rotten Tomatoes. WWE is also going after users who have made the download available to others. So, whether you just downloaded the movie for your own use or you allowed the file to “seed”, WWE still might be coming after you.

WWE is asking for actual damages, statutory damages of $150,000 per infringement, costs, and a jury trial. It’s not a good day to file share. But, with so many options of low dollar subscription services this practice has kind of been placed on the back burner. On the other hand, shutting down of some of the more popular torrent sites in the past year has also dealt a blow to the file sharing community.
