WWE is always looking to build their brand and sometimes that involves dusting off an old idea to bring back something that used to work pretty well. The WWE Universe has seen the re-emergence of WarGames, Starrcade, and shark cage matches in the last year. But it looks like WWE is considering bringing back another old favorite in 2018.
Pro Wrestling Sheet reports that WWE is considering bringing back the idea of a Global Warning pay-per-view event and will hold it in Australia if all things go according to plan. The last Global Warning Tour was in 2002 and was WWE’s first Australian event in 16 years. The tour was very rather successful drawing over 56,000 fans.
The last Global Warning tour featured The Rock successfully defending his Undisputed Championship against Triple H and Brock Lesnar in a triple threat match. Although the event was highly successful, it didn’t air live on pay-per-view. But it was made available for home video release later on. Since then Austrailia has always seen a WWE tour of some kind, but it looks like the Global Warning idea was put on the shelf until now.
The idea for this upcoming Global Warning show is to hold the event in October in the Melbourne Cricket Ground which holds around 100,000 people. If WWE could fill that kind of space for an event it could be pretty epic indeed.
WWE has had some trouble selling out venues recently, in fact, they’re even needing to tarp off large sections of buildings they used to sell out like the Los Angeles Staples Center for Raw last week. Therefore, filling a 100,000 seat venue in Australia would be huge for the company.
If they could fill the Melbourne Cricket Ground or even come close to capacity, it would go a long way to offset some of their numbers and push things in the right direction. Nothing is official just yet, but it looks like WWE is strongly considering this idea for another go at an Australian-based pay-per-view. On a side note, if a show starts at 8:00 pm in Melbourne, Australia it would air live at 4:00 am EST.
