This week’s episode of WWE SmackDown Live featured a huge dream match in the main event which saw John Cena take on Shinsuke Nakamura in a number one contenders match. Most fans seem to agree that the match delivered, and in the end it was Shinsuke Nakamura who got the win, and he will now go on to challenger Jinder Mahal for the WWE Championship at SummerSlam.
Shinsuke managed to put John Cena away with a Kinshasa, and he pinned him clean in the middle of the ring. However, it looks like WWE had different plans for the original finish.
The Wrestling Observer Newsletter reports that original plans called for Baron Corbin to interfere and try and attack Nakamura. Baron’s attack was then supposed to backfire with him inadvertently hitting Cena, allowing Nakamura to pick up the win. The idea was to use the finish to set up a John Cena vs. Baron Corbin match for SummerSlam.
The original finish of the match was reportedly posted on WWE.com but was later removed.
Whether it was because John Cena wanted to put Shinsuke Nakamura over clean, or because Vince McMahon simply changed his mind, it’s not known why WWE didn’t stick with the original plan.
