A few weeks ago on SmackDown Live, AJ Styles challenged Jinder Mahal for the WWE Championship, and he managed to win the title for the second time in his career. AJ made history that night as it was the first time that the title changed hands outside of North America, and his victory had a huge impact on the WWE Survivor Series card.
Jinder Mahal was originally set to take on Universal Champion Brock Lesnar in a non-title match, but AJ Styles ended up taking his place. Styles and Lesnar delivered on Sunday, night but prior to the match Jinder Mahal popped up on the screen to say he was rooting for AJ Styles because he’s a member of the SmackDown roster.
As Jinder Mahal was talking it was announced that AJ Styles will be defending his WWE Championship against The Modern Day Maharaja on SmackDown Live.
Up until he dropped the belt to AJ Styles in England, Jinder Mahal had been champion since May of this year. It was rumored at one point that Jinder may hold the title through WrestleMania, but obviously that didn’t end up happening.
With WWE making such a huge commitment to Jinder Mahal’s push, it will be interesting to see if AJ Styles holds on to the belt, or if Jinder Mahal becomes a two time champion on Tuesday.
