WWE Cancels Trademark On Major Name

WWE is a company that is constantly filing for trademarks, and from time to time the company ends up in battles over said trademarks.

AEW Executive Vice President Cody Rhodes has been in a trademark dispute with WWE over the ring name “Cody Rhodes” but it looks like the dispute may be over.

According to HeelByNature.com, WWE filed a cancellation notice with The United States Patent and Trademark Office on 11/2, and surrendered the Cody Rhodes trademark.

The cancellation was reportedly finalized Wednesday morning.

Cody filed for the “Cody Rhodes” trademark earlier this year, but the filing was opposed by WWE even though the trademark had expired.

Originally the trademark was secured by WWE in October of 2009, and the filing was good for 10 years. It expired in October of 2019. WWE did not renew within the six month grace period provided by the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

When WWE’s trademark expired Cody filed his own trademark on 4/13. WWE later tried to revive the trademark citing COVID-19 as a reason for the delay. Cody reacted to the filing when he posted the following:

Now that the trademark has been canceled by WWE, Cody has until January 2021 to update his case.
