If at first a gimmick match doesn’t succeed wait 10 years, hope people forget about it, and then try again. That seems to be the motto for WWE when it comes to the Punjabi Prison match, because it looks like the company is bringing it back for the Battleground pay-per-view next month.
Sportskeeda is reporting that WWE has plans to resurrect the Punjabi Prison match at the SmackDown Live exclusive event with Jinder Mahal defending his WWE Championship against Randy Orton inside the structure.
The Punjabi Prison structure is made up of two bamboo cages, one of which is four sides and 16 feet high, the other is made up of eight sides and is 20 feet high. The first cage has four doors, and once a wrestler escapes the first cage, they must then escape the second cage and the first wrestler to touch the floor with both feet wins.
The match was first introduced at the Great American Bash in 2006 where Big Show faced The Undertaker inside the Punjabi Prison, and the match hasn’t been used since The Great Khali faced Big Show inside the structure at No Mercy in 2007.
It appears that the idea of bringing the Punjabi Prison match back is that The Singh Brothers won’t be able to interfere in the WWE Title match.
The match has never really been all that well received by the fans, and people are already cracking jokes about the potential return of the Punjabi Prison match on social media. You can check out some of the reactions below.
