John Cena wrapped up his twenty three year run with WWE at Saturday Night’s Main Event when he faced off against Gunther in one final match. The finish got quite the reaction from the fans as Gunther ultimately picked up the win when he made Cena tap out.
Fightful Select reports that there were plenty of people on both sides of the fence regarding the finish for Cena’s final match. Most of the people on the creative side were in favor of the finish. Triple H was said to have had a smile on his face in the Gorilla position over the finish to the match, and he reportedly reacted to the boos backstage much like he did on camera.
The word from talent who wished that John Cena could’ve been booked to win was that the understood the reality of Gunther winning, and WWE booking moving forward.
It’s also being reported that John Cena is expected to make appearances for WWE on and off screen, but the extent of the on screen appearances is unknown. WWE is adamant that Cena won’t be wrestling again, and they don’t plan on asking him to return to the ring. Cena recently confirmed that he signed a five year deal with WWE that will keep him with the company as an ambassador.
