Earlier this year WWE held the Cruiserweight Classic, and the tournament culminated with TJ Perkins winning the Cruiserweight Championship. The CWC was a big hit, and it’s been rumored that the company is discussing other ideas for upcoming tournaments, and WWE recently announced not only a new tournament, but a new title as well.
At a press conference at the O2 Arena in London, Triple H announced that WWE will hold a tournament to crown the first-ever United Kingdom Champion in January of 2017. Tickets for the tournament go on sale today at 12 p.m. GMT at livenation.co.uk. The following details regarding the tournament were posted on WWE.com:
“The WWE United Kingdom Championship Tournament is a 16-competitor, two-day throwdown at Blackpool’s Empress Ballroom, airing live and exclusively on the award-winning WWE Network, featuring some of the best talent the U.K. has to offer. The last man standing at the end of the tournament will be crowned champion and awarded a title, which was also revealed at the conference.”
Triple H also noted during the press conference that WWE intends to use the tournament to launch a weekly wrestling series similar to 205 Live that would be produced in the U.K.

It’s also been announced that Nigel McGuinness, William Regal and Finn Balor will be calling the action for the tournament at the commentary table.
It’s interesting to note that ROH recently released a statement saying that Nigel McGuinness had resigned as head matchmaker of Ring of Honor.
