A number of big names held the ECW World Championship during the company’s original run and the lineage continued when WWE resurrected the ECW brand in 2006. When the ECW brand was brought back the original ECW World Championship belt also returned, but a new silver belt was introduced in 2008.
Mark Henry recently spoke to Isiah Madrigal about the origin of the silver ECW World Championship and he claimed that WWE wanted a title belt that fit him as the previous title was too small.
“They wanted to find a title that fit me, because if you look at those pictures, that ECW title was very small, and it was like one of the old-school type belts, and they wanted me to have a belt that was befitting of a giant. So they designed this. I mean, that belt was huge, and it was probably about 10 to 12 pounds. It was very heavy and I had to go buy a new bag for a carry-on because it wouldn’t fit in my old luggage.”
Other notable names who held the silver ECW World Championship include Matt Hardy, Christian and Tommy Dreamer. Eventually the belt was retired in 2010 with Ezekiel Jackson being the final person to win the belt.
