Friday at Crown Jewel in Saudi Arabia, Randy Orton, Rey Mysterio, Jeff Hardy, The Miz, Dolph Ziggler, Kurt Angle, Bobby Lashley and Seth Rollins all competed in the WWE World Cup tournament.
But oddly enough none of the aforementioned competitors went on to win the tournament.
During the last match of the tournament, The Miz sold an injury and Shane McMahon entered the tournament in his place then defeated Dolph Ziggler to win it all.
Dave Meltzer revealed on Wrestling Observer Radio that Shane McMahon winning was always the plan, and we’re seeing the beginning of a heel turn for the SmackDown Live Commissioner (via Ringside News).
“So the idea is that Shane is going heel and this was — Miz wasn’t hurt. This was all booked to be what it is: the beginning of a Shane McMahon heel turn. You know as far as why you want another hell McMahon authority figure on a show? I guess it’s a response to the declining ratings of SmackDown.”
