The road to WrestleMania 41 was full of twists and turns and last month at Elimination Chamber, John Cena shocked the world when he turned heel and beat down Cody Rhodes.

Dave Meltzer recently talked about the heel turn on Wrestling Observer Radio and noted that the decision to turn heel at Elimination Chamber instead of WrestleMania was made by John Cena.

“Obviously there was the decision about John Cena on the day of the show on whether the turn was going to be that day or whether they were going to save the turn for WrestleMania, that was John Cena’s decision. He made the call to do it. Levesque makes the final call, but John Cena was the one. The decision came within the last couple of days.”

“If you remember the day of the show, the segment with Dwayne was originally going to be after the first or second match, it was not going to be after the Rumble (Chamber). That’s because they were not going to be doing the turn that night, the turn was going to be at Mania. And then John wanted to do the turn that night, so they moved the segment to the end of the show.”

Ultimately John Cena ended up defeating Cody Rhodes to win the Undisputed WWE Championship at WrestleMania 41 after Travis Scott interfered in the main event.

This week on Raw, Randy Orton attacked John Cena when he hit the current Undisputed WWE Champion with the RKO. All signs seem to be pointing to another Cena vs. Orton match at some point in the future, but there’s currently no word on what WWE has planned for Cody Rhodes following WrestleMania.
