According to The Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the reason why John Cena has been hosting “The Today Show” recently is because NBCUniversal is trying to overhaul the image of professional wrestling.
NBCU has a lot riding on WWE and the USA Network and they’re hoping that changing the public image of wrestling will lead to better advertising deals. The USA Network is a profitable network for NBCU and with SmackDown moving to USA next week, 5 of the network’s 21 prime time hours will be dedicated to WWE content. It’s important to NBCU that they get better sponsors for those 5 hours than WWE has had in the past.
In regards to his acting career, it was also noted by the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that Cena is expected to receive more offers from Hollywood thanks to his breakout roles in “Trainwreck”, “Sisters”, and “Daddy’s Home.”
