A few months ago WWE issued a press release announcing that Dean Ambrose would not be signing a new contract with the company, and he parted ways with WWE in April.
Ambrose isn’t staying quiet, as he made his AEW debut as Jon Moxley at the Double or Nothing pay-per-view on Saturday, and it was later revealed that he signed a multi-year deal with All Elite Wrestling.
Dave Meltzer noted on Wrestling Observer Radio that WWE found out last Thursday that Jon Moxley was joining AEW, two days before Double or Nothing.
In regards to whether or not WWE knew Moxley was interested in AEW before leaving, it’s believed that he indicated he was just burnt out. It seems WWE officials were under the impression he just needed time off, and if he decided to wrestle he might pop up in places like CZW.
