Throughout WWE history there have been many successful groups who have found strength in numbers and The New Day have managed to work well as a team. The New Day first debuted on WWE programming in 2014 and they’ve been together ever since. With the group having such a long run it seems that WWE at least considered the idea of splitting them up.
Fightful Select is reporting that Vince McMahon made repeated attempts to split The New Day up while he was in charge. Multiple people on the creative team have said that it was made clear years ago that the group didn’t want to break up. However, Vince McMahon reportedly pitched the idea of The New Day splitting up multiple times.
One pitch for the split came after a decree from Vince McMahon that Kofi Kingston & Xavier Woods no longer be referred to as The New Day without Big E. That only lasted a few weeks and after that Vince pitched for Xavier Woods to turn on Kofi Kingston after winning King of the Ring, but Woods fought against the idea. Another pitch to break The New Day up came after KofiMania. However, the group also fought that idea as well. In recent years McMahon was said to be adamant that the group get split up in the draft which only led to him being adamant about The New Day reuniting.
During an appearance on the My Mom’s Basement podcast in 2020 it was confirmed by Big E that there was talk of The New Day breaking up, but he explained that the trio was adamant about sticking together.
“We’ve heard rumors in the past and had a conversation with a very important person who said, ‘Alright, this is the idea.’ But we’ve been adamant about [not breaking up]. I get why fans want a breakup. It’s something new. But if you look at the history of breakups, tell me one, besides The Shield — they were always designed to break into individual stars — I can’t think of a single break up that benefited all members.
Rusev Day was so hot, getting great reactions on a nightly basis. They break up, Aiden turns on Rusev, and then Aiden is off TV two or three weeks later. I don’t even think they had a big pay-per-view match. I don’t think Rusev’s career benefited from it either. The same thing about the Wyatt’s. The chances that all three of us would break up and have great runs, I find it to be very slim. Also, we’re having so much fun as a group. If you break us up, I’m going to go back to being serious? I’m going to turn on Kofi and now, what kind of dynamic do we have? I don’t see a feasible way to do it. We’ve only scratched the surface on what we can do. It’s a lazy fix to break us up.”
Big E has been out of action since March of last year, but he recently shared an update on his recovery and you can get more on that here.
