They say that anything can happen in WWE and years ago back in 2006 the world was shocked when Rey Mysterio ended up capturing the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania 22.
The moment was big for Rey Mysterio fans, but people couldn’t help but notice that Mysterio wasn’t booked to be a strong champion during his title reign.
Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer recently discussed Rey’s WWE World Heavyweight Championship reign, and he noted that Vince McMahon had no interest in putting the title on Rey.
“And proceeded to make him the biggest joke as a champion in the history of the company. Vince was adamant about Rey not being in the Mania main event, was going to lose a match even after winning the Rumble. Everyone on the writing team wanted to put the title on Rey. Finally, he went to Patterson and Patterson said to put it on Rey Vince very begrudgingly did, and then Rey was the only champion in history to lose TV squashes as champion.”
Of course Rey Mysterio went on to win the WWE World Heavyweight Championship a second time, and he also briefly captured the WWE Championship.
