The WWE Monday Night Raw roster is loaded with talent, but not everyone can work in the main event. Right now the main event scene on the Raw roster is being dominated by Brock Lesnar who holds the Universal Championship, and the champion is looking ahead to the Royal Rumble.
It was recently reported on Wrestling Observer Radio that Brock Lesnar was originally set to defend his Universal Championship against Finn Balor at the Royal Rumble, but plans have been changed.
In regards to why the match has been changed, according to Dave Meltzer, Vince McMahon feels that Finn Balor isn’t “over enough.”
Fans were surprised to see Finn Balor take a loss to Kane the night after TLC, but the idea was that Finn Balor could be built back up by the Royal Rumble, but Vince McMahon reportedly gave up on the idea of building him back up.
Finn Balor was featured as one of the top stars on Raw after he was called up from NXT, and he went on to become the first ever Universal Champion. Unfortunately Balor got injured during the title match, and he’s struggled to break through into the main event scene since making his return earlier this year.
Throughout 2017 Finn Balor has teased that at some point he would be challenging Universal Champion Brock Lesnar for the belt he never lost, but it has yet to happen.
As far replacements go for Finn at the Royal Rumble, it wouldn’t make sense for him to face someone like Braun Strowman, because it won’t do Strowman any good because WWE is still committed to Roman Reigns vs. Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania.
Brock Lesnar’s opponent for the Royal Rumble is said to be up in the air right now.
