After weeks of teasers Penta finally made his debut on Monday Night Raw this week when he defeated Chad Gable in a one on one match. Fightful Select reports that originally Penta was supposed to debut as Rey Mysterio’s mystery partner in a tag team match against The New Day. It’s not clear why plans were changed.
Ahead of his debut on Raw, WWE listed Penta related merchandise for sale on WWE Shop, and sources claimed it was just a “happy accident.” Penta wasn’t hidden and was backstage throughout the day mingling with talent and participating in photo shoots.
Reports claiming that Penta’s segment went over time are said to be true. Internally the match was listed as one segment, but Penta’s promo went longer than expected.
Regarding possible heat on Penta due to other things in the show getting cut, a higher up noted that they hadn’t specifically heard of heat on Penta, and if there was heat it should have been on whoever decided that Raw needed a hard out. The idea was to get Raw off the air in about two and a half hours.
Talent who spoke about the situation claimed they didn’t hear about Penta having any heat. Talent were aware of what the moment meant to Penta and his family, and were happy for him.
